Introduction
Background to Explore It
The ‘Explore It’ site and toolkit were created as part of a research project ‘Effective Spaces for Working in Higher and Further Education’, a collaboration between the University of Strathclyde and consultants DEGW. The research project was funded by the Scottish Funding Council.
‘Explore It’ was launched in October 2008, concluding an eight month research programme. The aim of the research was to inform and guide those embarking on transformational workspace change of the opportunities, benefits and challenges that lie ahead.
The research project had three goals:
- To bring together disparate strands of research on how the work environment within the sector is changing and to identify the factors which are shaping those changes;
- To build upon that research base by looking in detail at a number of case study projects and sharing what has been learned from those projects;
- To develop tools which would enable those embarking on changing their work environment to do so in an informed way and with strong foundations to their decisions.
The main aim of ‘Explore It’ is to foster dialogue between all stakeholders, reflecting a user-focused philosophy for the design and planning of working and learning environments. The tools and resources are here for use by anyone within learning institutions interested in investigating what changing their workplace might mean to them.
